A NEW PLAYER IN TOWN

In the summer of 2021, Turner Sports landed the broadcast rights to the NHL and changed the broadcast landscape for the sport in the US. We were thrilled to be their partner in producing their first NHL broadcast package.

The goal was to bring a combination of big fun, intensity, and grit to the NHL landscape in a way that only TNT could.

BLACK ICE

Black Ice, not the hidden patches on the road, but the intensity of ice lighting up ice in dark environments, was the basis for our broadcast package. We would set each scene in a dark environment that would allow for bombastic and intense moments of propulsive light, action, and excitement.

Our original pitch:

A new adventure, a new approach, surprising for hockey. NHL Turner style.

Black ice is real. It’s beautiful, cold, fast, and dangerous.

On black ice, physical control is at its limits. Here at Turner, Black Ice is where action and reaction collide, where fast meets furious. Where speed meets grace. Where fans roar and teams race.

It’s hockey night on TNT.

A BIG SHOOT

2 Days, 50+ Extras, 50+ Crew, and a LOT of takes!

One piece of the NHL on TNT production that isn’t as common in modern motion graphics was a massive live-action shoot with 50+ extras, multiple street closures, and a bold vision to capture authentic fan moments for all 32 teams.

MOTION CAPTURE

In order to truly capture the intense impact of high-intensity hockey players, we partnered with Dark Slope Studios to capture hours of real hockey players skating, shooting, checking, and being hockey players.

Each stylized player in the package is driven by real hockey players, doing real things!

ON AIR
